In 2007, the Belde Port was seeking to continue
the implementation after seven years interruption due to the Izmit-Earthquake
and to start the operation of the container terminal. The following
phased development for achieving a projected throughput of 1,600,000
TEU/year was proposed:
a) Phase I a: Strengthening of the 450 m existing quay wall and
terminal yard at three hinterland levels; water depth 16.5 m
b) Phase I b: Construction of a new container terminal with a
quay length of 500 m and a terminal depth of 290 m at level +3
m; water depth 17 m
c) Phase I c: Construction of a new Ro-Ro terminal, two Ro-Ro
ramps with 24 m and 32 m lengths and a dolphins catwalk; water
depth 12 m
d) Phase II: Extension of the container terminal with a quay length
of 486 m and a terminal depth of 290 m; water depth 17 m
e) Phase III: Further extension of the container terminal to a
total quay length of 1700 m and expansion of the terminal (phase
I a) to terminal depth of 290 m; water depth 17 m
f) Phase IV: Ro-Ro expansion and construction of a new intermodal
yard (connection to railway) on the east terminal
The special challenge was the consideration of
very high earthquake accelerations according to the new Turkish
standards, which led to special resistant constructions.
